The oxygen system is one of the most critical elements of live fish transport. It should be engineered according to fish species, stocking density, water temperature and route duration.

Why Is Oxygen Critical?

Fish density inside a transport tank is higher than in the natural environment. Dissolved oxygen therefore needs to be monitored continuously. Insufficient oxygen increases stress and loss risk.

Main Oxygen-System Components

  • Liquid oxygen or another suitable oxygen source
  • Generator or auxiliary oxygen source

Why Is Redundancy Important?

A secondary oxygen source should be available if the primary source, pump or engine fails. Redundant infrastructure improves operational safety.

Water Circulation and Oxygen Distribution

Even when oxygen is injected, poor circulation may create low-oxygen zones inside the tank. Water circulation is therefore an essential part of the oxygen system.

Relationship Between Temperature and Oxygen

As water temperature rises, oxygen-holding capacity decreases. Tank insulation and temperature management should therefore be planned together with the oxygen system.
